The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has adopted a modern school remodelling approach which takes a holistic view of school infrastructure and allows for selected schools to undergo a complete facelift, including landscaping, perimeter fencing, ICT room, sick bay, water facilities, amongst others.
The remodelling approach which was introduced by Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC) was carried out under the Board’s 2016 UBE Intervention fund in selected schools across the State.
According to the Executive Chairman SUBEB, Dr Stephen Odey, “we have tried to adopt the modern school approach, as introduced by the Executive Secretary, UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi. He came up with the concept of doing a holistic rehabilitation of schools, where all the buildings within the premises of a school will be rehabilitated, furnished with state of the arts facilities and equipped to create a very conducive environment, rather than rehabilitating one classroom block in one school. And that is why in 2016 intervention, we try to bring to bear what UBEC has instructed us to do,” he said.
The SUBEB Boss who commissioned projects at one of the selected schools, Holy Child Convent Primary School, Okuku, Yala LGA also monitored projects in Holy Cross primary school, Ugep,Yakurr LGA, Holy Child Convent Primary School, Ikom LGA, and St Benedict primary school II, Ogoja, where there are ongoing construction of ICT/sick bays. Other schools benefitting from this modern school approach include; Government Secondary school, Akim, Calabar Municipality, St Theresa primary School Ipong, Obudu.
Dr Odey also stated that the board is presently constructing a six classroom storey building with staircase designed to assist the physically challenged in Mary Knoll Secondary School, Okuku, Holy Cross Primary school, Ugep, Yakurr LGA, St Theresa primary School Ipong, Obudu LGA, Government Secondary school, Akim, Calabar Municipality and St Benedict primary school II, Ogoja, LGA.
The Board is constantly improving on the standard of education and changing the narrative of public schools with the supply of Computers, solar panels, sporting equipment(table tennis), recreational facilities (merry go rounds, slides) amongst others, to school across the State.
A visit was also paid to the UBEC Junior Secondary School, Yala LGA by the SUBEB Chairman and his team in the on-going monitoring of projects and inspection of schools across the state. He expressed his satisfaction with the standard of education in the school, as well as the appearance of students.
