Ogoja people demands for a Federal University

The people of Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State have demanded for a Federal University to be established in the area.

Despite being one of the oldest province, and one amongst the only province without a state, Ogoja as an urban town have struggled in many establishments especially Education.

Due to this and sundry, Mike Udam in a memo have written on behalf of the people for the Federal Government, State Government and Lawmakers to see the need to address the matter. Udam wrote thus;

Dear Son of Ogoja,
I am writing this letter to you to provoke in you the desire to join me in aggressively and strategically demanding for the location of a Federal University here in Ogoja, the headquarter of Cross River Northern Senatorial Zone.

Since 1999 till date, Ogoja has been relegated to the background. We are yet to get a shot at the Senate, we are yet to get one giant government project located here by successive administration. Our Bansara rice mill is left to rot and Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) is a shadow of a functional university. We lost Teachers Training College (TTC) due to government policy summersault. We lost the School of Nursing due to top political decision by those in power. The stadium that started in the last administration is now a big abandoned project. Nothing to show for the status of Ogoja.

The time to take our destiny in our hands is now. I am privileged to know that it is within the powers of the president through the minister of education to locate a Federal University anywhere in Nigeria. Three things are required. First those in need of a university must have evidence of having a need for the establishment of the university. Second, our legislators must place the request on either of the house of representative or the senate. And lastly a letter of request accompanied by courtesy call by the governor or leading figures from the area demanding for a university.

Brethren, this is the time to come together and place a strong demand for the location of a federal university here in Ogoja.

We have land big enough for the university. Even if it means we should use Federal Science college as a take off campus, I think we have to use that option.
With a university here, the economy of Ogoja will significantly improve and our capacity to be on top will be greatly enhanced. Obudu is far ahead academically because of the presence of FCE Obudu.

The member representing Ogoja/Yala in the House of Representative Abuja is in the know about the demand and had promised to place it on the floor of the house as a bill requesting for the university.

David Mark has secured one for his people of Oturkpo.

Tony Owoye has secured one for the people of Anambra state.

Nothing will stop us from demanding and getting a federal university here in Ogoja.

All we need is place the demand and follow it up. If we cant get a state, then let us get a university.
I am proposing a meeting by 10am on the 21st of December here in Ogoja.

We need a location that will be used free for the meeting and you are free to make your input.
God bless you”.

  1. It’s true talk, we ought to be fared better than this. The lukewarmness of our politician who are holding politcal positions is anathema maranatha. We have to fight now go beyond the bond and make our request known so that justice will be done
