The Efik National Association (ENA) Incarnation, United States of America (USA) on Friday began their biennial Medical Mission in Cross River State.
The exercise which started on the 3rd of November has on the 4th recorded about 500 turn up as more is expected before the end, being 11th November, 2017.
The aim of the biennial according to the President of the association, Mr. Erete Erete Ebong is to alleviate the health status of the people of Cross River State.
He urged other organisations similar to the Efik National Association to have their people in mind, to come back home and give back for the development of the society. “It is not about having a name, but what you’re giving to the society you come from.
“My advice to them is that; hey, your people back home need your help. They need basic health care. The government may be trying their best, but with more advanced technology and more newer medications, we that are outside the country can come back to our community and give back to them.”
Speaking also was Dr. Ojong Charles, Senior Registrar, Department of Family Medicine, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) whose specialisation is to screen patients with surgical problems.
Dr. Ojong said he’s already screened 15 patients on the first day and is expecting to screen more the 2nd day. He added that, the screened patients will undergo surgery in 5 days time.
The cases that require surgery, Ojong said includes hernias, goitre. “So far, I’ve screened patients with hernias, goitre, prostrate (for prostatectomy), 2 women with uterine fibroids and 2 patients with eye problems that’ll require surgery.”
Ojong continued with gratitude to the Efik National Association Inc; “Programmes like this help people who have such problems and cannot afford the money for surgery. Like the man with huge hernia, even Government hospital that are subsidised, he couldn’t afford to pay for the bills. Therefore, outreaches like this present an opportunity for such persons.”
“Two days ago, a friend called and was requesting for the cost of hernia surgery in UCTH, I told her it’s about N60 000, and she said, she’d gone to the General Hospital and they told her more than N90 000 and she left. You may be surprised that, even the price at UCTH, the person may not be able to afford.
“I even called the person this morning that if the patient is in Calabar, he/she can come and get it done for free at the ENA Inc, USA outreach”, he reiterated.
The opticians also recorded cases of glaucoma, long and short sightedness and more. “Many of which required surgery”, they said.
Also, the Volunteering Nurses attested for patients with high Blood Pressure (BP), high sugar levels, people with large Body Mass Index (BMI) and others.
