The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has so far shared about 100,000 condoms to youths, others at the Calabar Carnival 2016 event.
This information was disclosed to Calabar Reporters by Mr. Kenneth Ehouzou, Head of Office UNFPA, Cross River State during the event in Calabar as the fun-filled crowd were begging for more.
Statistic has it that, more than 4,000,000 (four million) people attended the Africa’s biggest Street Party also known as Carnival Calabar Festival. With this multitude, the UNFPA through it Wise Up Cross River Campaign which is strongly supported by The Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF) and other MDAs including Education for Vaccine (Eva), stole the headlines as the MDA recorded the highest number of condoms distributed in a day in a city. With Rio de Jainero holding the previous record of 450,000 for 16 days, an average of 28,125.
Hajia Kori, the Communication Specialist of UNFPA, Abuja was on hand to join in the distribution with a Police officer demanding for more condoms from her.
At the intense period of the event when a two-member Wise Up team was demonstrating on how to use the female and the male condoms, the crowd started yelling, “we want more” as they almost ripped off some of the distributors. It was similar to every anchor/judgment point throughout the entire Carnival. Meanwhile, some were referred to the Wise Up Zone by the distributors.
Wise Up Band was one of the non-competing band that took part in this year’s Carnival. The newcomers took their time to spread news and vital information about HIV/AIDS through demonstrations, tutoring as well as condom distributions which is the most vital.
The Wise Up Zone is located inside the Christmas Village, Calabar Municipal Council, Calabar, Cross River State.
HIV/AIDS-free generation is worth fighting for!
