Seagull Band tipped the other bands to win the 2016 Calabar Carnival ultimate prize with the judges and viewers describing the band as the most excellence.
The 2016 and the twelfth edition of the Calabar Carnival recorded more than four million attendees and participant across the world, a record that exceeds the former, being two million kept in 2006. Seagull band would be glad to be part of this record as they ousted Masta Blasta Band (3-time winners), Passion 4 Band (7-time winners), Freedom Band (1-time winners) and Bayside Band to clinch the super fabulous prize.
The Executive Secretary of Cross River State Carnival Commission, Mr. Austin Cobham announced the results on Thursday in Calabar, shortly after international music sensations, P-Square ended the all night musical concert at the U. J. Esuene Stadium.
Cobham said “after the judges’ collation of marks from the performances of the five bands along the twelve Kilometre stretch of the carnival route, the winners are as follows: Seagull band (winner), Passion 4 Band (1st runners up) and Masta Blasta band (2nd runners up).
Among the five competing band, Seagull band is one of the Carnival Bands registered in 2005 for the Cross River State annual Christmas festival. It is the most stylish and coordinated body with the main objective of promoting and sustaining the Tourism and Hospitality industry and at large, to enhance the status of the under privilege through charity. The band display the African Culture through aesthetics, talents and innovation, paraded annually during the Carnival.
Seagull Band is identified by its eye catching distinctive colour – red and maintains defined hierarchical structure. It is the band that recognises and celebrates Nigerians and other artistes, movie starts and beauty queens. The band is under the dynamic and charismatic leadership of the vibrant distinguish Sen. (Princess) Florence Ita-Giwa (OON) who is ably assisted by Mrs. Affiong Effiom (Fulbright School) Lecturer in Theatre and Media Studies, University of Calabar, Nigeria.
Florence Ita Giwa is the wife of late Dele Giwa, a leader who was killed by a paper bomb during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. Since the death of her husband, Ita-Giwa has been a vibrant activist and a fighter for the people of Bakassi Peninsula. She’s also a former senator who represented Cross River State Southern District at the National Assembly and a former Legislative Adviser to late Nigerian President Musa Yar’adua.
Passion 4 is the Second place winner and Masta Blasta is the Third. We had five adjudication points on the route and the judges did their jobs accordingly. We hope you had a wonderful time with us and we invite you in advance for the 2017 edition of Carnival Calabar,” said Cobham.
