Senator John Owan-Enoh (PDP), member representing Cross River Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, on Sunday awarded scholarship worth N70 million to over 40,000 students of various categories from his constituency.
Those who benefitted from the scholarship include secondary school students, entrants into Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME); university undergraduates and postgraduate students, all from his constituency.
The 66 electoral wards shows indication of 60 Post Graduates happily returning back to school with N100,000 each; 660 under graduates N50,000 each; 1320 Senior Secondary School 3 students with N15,000 each; Juniour Secondary School 111 students made back to school N5000 each; while Candidates for JAMB receives N6000 each.
Making the presentation at P.C.N Primary School, Ikom Local Government Area Enoh said the support was to assist students in the pursuit of their academic careers.
The senator said he rolled out the program despite the current economic realities the country is faced with not because he had too much but that he recognized the important role it will play to assist students who are faced with untold hardship in school.
In Enoh’s words: “I am not doing this program because I have so much money; but because of the love, sacrifice and a sense of responsibility to the people of my constituency.
“”It is a feeling of indebtedness that I owe to the people of Central Senatorial district, who toiled with me and kept faith during the time of my campaigns,” he said.
The senator said that each of the 66 wards have equal number of beneficiaries and advised the beneficiaries to make proper use of the opportunity.
Speaking on behalf of the local government areas the Vice Chancellor Academics, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi described the Senator as very excellent performer adding that the scholarship supports will go a long way to help students gain their ground in school.
She further urged beneficiaries to take advantage of the support to fulfil their dreams.
On his part, the Youth Leader of Central Senatorial District, George Ajangson who described the feat by Enoh as uncommon urged other politicians to take a cue from the senator.
Ajangson pledged Cross River Senatorial youths continuous support of Enoh.
A cross session of beneficiaries including Master Ejong Emmanuel thanked the senator and promised that they would do everything to justify the confidence reposed on them by taking their academics seriously.
